First fatality at pulp mill

A construction worker at the Winstone Samsung Pulp Mill at Karioi was fatally injured last Thursday afternoon. He was Mr Terry Collins, 31, of Wanganui who was employed by Jurgens Demolition of Wanganui, subcontractors to Downer Construction, contractors for the mill extensions due to be commissioned early next year.

The accident occurred at about 2.30pm when a workcage containing two mer was being lifted to enable them to cut holes for new pipes in an existing concrete wall. The crane apparently toppled and Mr Collins died as a result of injuries received in the fa.ll. The other man was uninjured. First aid workers at the site administered CPR

(cardiac pulmonary resuscitation) in an attempt at revival while they awaited emergency medical services which had been summoned from the ATG in Waiouru. None of these attempts were successful. As a mark of respect for their colleague other workers were sent home early and a social planned for that evening to celebrate the progress of the work on site to date was cancelled.
