Raetihi sign nears completion
Twenty-eight year old Robert Mana, was seen recently putting the finishing touches to a totara arving that is soon destined to become Raetihi's town sign. It took him about sixty hours to complete. Originally from Te Kuiti, Robert began carving about two years ago. He has spent the last three months using the premises of Alan Brown and James Clifford, cabinet makers of Raetihi. The sign was initiated by Raetihi borough foreman, Mr Craig Ryland. It was left to local craftsmen to
interpret and as a result of earlier talks with Maori elders Peter Edmonds and Mark Cribb, a relevant carving resulted. Said Alan Brown, of Makers "it seems that Raetihi is just beginning to come into its own through its history and location." "This sign, along with the other items of early local history already placed around town, adds a sense of balance which will take into account both cultures that comprise our community."
