Racing with BULLY

The first day at Wanganui produced some very good racing on a track that was in excellent order for this time of the year. The Breeders Guineas was an exciting event with first Beechland then Fothers looking likely winners but then Avana had the drop on everyone and came home in fine style to win by more than two lengths. This victory has caused her trainer, Ray Cleaver to have to revise her programme and it is now expected that Avana will now have to

crack at the Bonus of $ 100,000 to a horse that can win all three of the Wanganui Guineas, Hawkes Bay Guineas and the Wellington Guineas. On last Saturday's form she has still got some tricks to show the good range of colts who will also be contesting these races but after witnessing her recent win I would have to stick with the filly. An improver could be the Taranaki colt Kingdom Bay, trained at Stratford by Jack Taylor, he came home in fine style and is sure to win his fair share of stakes this season. Last Saturday was his first start since February. Another Stratford based horse ready to win is Brannigan, trained by Peter Bothwell who has that winning polish on this good four year old who finished on at Wanganui in the first leg for his fifth placing. Avondale races in the north on Saturday and if he is an acceptor I think A1 Dwain could add great interest to the first leg. He

was down to start on the second day at Wanganui so check on how he went there. Harpoon is nearly ready to give some curry to the opposition, remember he had good form last year and showed plenty of promise. From Cambridge two to impress are Jimbil and Respond. Jimbil in particular has improved the proverbial ton over recent weeks. Feilding will be the centre of attraction in the Central Districts and there very well could be some interesting acceptors with a number of horses now preparing for racing across the Tasman and also some of our own major events. Commissionaire could just about be ready to make an appearance and generally he starts in great condition and could win first up. It certainly is a wonder to me that he has not crossed to Australia. Bully suggests you have a wee wager on Celerina at Feilding ... Remember you read it in the Bulletin and Bully told you first.
