'Numbers' may provide answer
At last Monday's meeting of the Waimarino County Council Cr. Winston Oliver reported on a fire in Pukekaha Valley and mentioned the difficulty in identifying rural properties and describing their precise locations for the benefit of emergency services. A possible solution to the this problem could be the proposed rural numbering system which Federated Farmers were offering. This system would have the advantage of identifying isolated properties in remote country areas by allocating each one with its own number which would be duplicated on a master map to be held at the various emergency service depots such as police and fire stations, hospitals etc. There would be a nominal cost in setting up this system but most farmers would be prepared to pay as part of their rates on a 'once-only' basis, the $5-$l0 that would be required, said Cr Oliver "certainly I would consider it a very good investment if ever I needed a fire engine or an ambulance in a hurry." Waimarino County Council resolved to advise Federated Farmers that the council intends to participate in the scheme.
