CAPSIZED CARROTS

A truck laden with second grade carrots destined for stock feed overturned and spilled its load when it failed to take the bend at the bottom of Ponanga Saddle on the Turangi side last Sunday morning after its brakes failed. The driver — an Ohakune man but not a member of the Ohakune Growers Association — was not injured but the Turangi-Tokaanu Highway was strewn with carrots to which passing motorists helped themselves. Peter Hammond, president of the Ohakune Growers Association, said he hoped that not too many of these motorists will complain about the second grade quality of these un-bagged carrots — "after all they were for stock feed."
