Orautoha Woolshed Ball
Sub-standard tennis courts have forced Orautoha netballers to rack their brains in search of a fundraising venture to put things right. Secretary of the Orautoha Hall Committee Mrs Nicki
Williams believes they have come up with a winner. The committee will hold a "woolshed ball" in Fahey's woolshed on 15 September, with proceeds going towards upgrading the courts, she
says. (See Public Noiices for details). The courts are now in year-round use, biit little has been done to maintain them since they were laid in 1 956, Mrs Williams says. For the first time this year Orautoha has formed a senior neiball team and entered the local competition, she says. And with schoolchildren combining with Raetihi children to play in the junior grade the netballers have found the court conditions inadequate. The fundraising is to be shared between the Orautoha Hall and school committees and the netball club. The courts, along with the swimming baths and hall, are on school land but all are maintained by the Orautoha, Makakahi and Ruatiti Valley communities. Locals see the Orautoha School (the school roll currently stands at 1 8) as the hub of those communities, Mrs Williams says. The hall is used by the school for gyni and concerts and - for regular valley functions. After fundraising activities earlier this year the communities combined to scrape down and repaint the haH oVer a number of working bees. The Woolshed Ball will feature top Wanganui band Kamiah and a homemade supper.
