Help wanted
Several strong people are asked to flex their muscles for one or two hours in the name of art in a fortnight's time. The organiser of the Turoa (Ohakune) Art Awards, Mrs Bea Barnes, last week appealed for volunteers to help carry paintings to the upstairs lounge of the Ohakune Club. "We are desperately in need of help to hang the exhibition. Anyone strong and willing to help position the heavy screens and lend a hand with carrying the paintings will be needed," she said. In past years the work has been left to Mrs Barnes and a few helpers, but this year she is afraid the heavy work may be a bit much. Volunteers are asked to help hang the exhibition on Thursday, 23, and Friday,
24 August, and to give an hour or two to help dismantie and pack paintings on Saturday, 1 September. The organisers work hard to bring the awards together for the benefit of the town, and Mrs Barnes hopes people will rally round to help out. The public can view the exhibition at the Ohakune Club from Monday, 27 August, until noon on Saturday, 1 September. Already 30 entries have been received for the awards competition, which will be judged by a member of the New Zealand Academy of Arts. The closing date for entries is this Friday, 10 August. Mrs Barnes expects a flood of last-minute ehtries to the competition, whieh is open to artists living in the central North Island from Hamilton to Levin.
