Racing with BULLY

By the time you read this the winner of the jockey premiership will be known and what a thriller it has been. I am writing this just after the Otaki meeting on 25 July and at this stage Garry Phillips and David Walsh are level-pegging on 107 with only three riding days left. Friday sees racing at Ruakaka, Saturday probably both will be riding at Wanganui, and the final meet of the season will be the Nelson meeting to be held at Avondale on Monday, 30 July. The tracks in the North

Island are now very heavy. Most really found the going at Awapuni and Otaki extremely tiresome and many stopped in their tracks the instant they reached the post. The race caller at Otaki commented that he could not remember ever seeing Otaki in such heavy conditions. Some hayburners to keep an eye on in this part of the North Island would include the following from Foxton, Blue Silk, Panphilae, and Genera Lee, while at Awapuni Brotherston, Gaimoss and Diamond Raider hold considerable appeal with their immediate engagements. A news flash from Woodville reports that Bridge Player, Ballihu, Kerrykeion, and Regal Time are appreciating the softer tracks and all could see them off to a good start when the 1984/85 season commences on 1 Atigust. Dannevirke Hunt Club commences the new season on that date, when all racehorses have their birthday and become one year older. Racing this Saturday in

the north will be held at Franklin. This course is a beauty with all horses having a show on this roomy track with a 500-roetre straight. Ngapuhi Gold, Kiazam and Taled Off could help pay the power bill. Our man in the Waikato is excited by the work being done by Crown and Anchor and, in particular, Tamalane, so I think the latter will be my Best Bet of the week. Punters are reminded of the new hours to be introduced at the TAB as from 1 August. It would be advisable to check the 'Hours' on the door. One big change is that week day openings will be at 10am. Remember Bully tips them first ... and the Bulletin is where you read it.
