NEW STATUS FOR PIPIRIKI IF WANGANUI PARK GOES AHEAD

Work carries on at the Pipiriki Ranger Station in anticipation of a Government declaration establishing the new Wanganui River National Park. Pipiriki is seen as the major visitor centre for canoeists and motorists, and plans are underway for upgrading the office, visitor services and staff accommodation to match the area's new status. The siting of a Park Headquarters is yet to be announced, but the Waimarino is one area being promoted as a logical choice. Others are Wanganui and Taumarunui. This month's snap election delayed the establishment of the Wanganui River National Park.

At its June meeting the National Parks Authority recommended to the Minister of Lands that the proposal should be presented to Cabinet for consideration. When the early election was called that decision was deferred and will now be evaluated by the new government. Before the election all political parties were said to be in agreement with the proposal for a Wanganui River National Park, but a final decision may stll be some way off. Despite the recent visit from the National Roads Authority, who travelled by bus from Raetihi to Wanganui via the River Road, there will be no additional funds forthcoming in the near future to upgrade the road.
