Community College to serve Waimarino
At its first meeting of the Wanganui Regional Community College, the liaison committee discussed how best it could serve the needs of the Waimarino community. The committee felt that it was important to begin its work by offering courses which would be of benefit to the youth of the area, particularly young college leavers who were experiencing difficulty in obtaining jobs. within the . local community. It was felt that courses should be offered that would include communication skills, grooming, budgeting, catering, presentation skills, and, for those interested in the skiing business — a ski mechanics course.
In order to coordinate the various aspects of these courses a coordinator would be required who was able to take responsibility for the liaison and coordination of the courses as well as being a parent figure that the young people could relate to«and feel comfortable with. Anyone who feels that they possess these qualities is interested in taking on the responsibility of group leader, should contact the Community College in Wanganui or ring Margo Webb at the Raetihi Library or Kim McCulloch at the Waiouru Primary School. The Community College also hopes to provide courses to suit a variety of interests within the community and is planning to offer possible courses in Japanese language, stained glass work, community leadership, preparation of, possum skins (including the preparation of finished garments from skins) and small machinery maintenance.
