Painter makes mark in town
Reto Melchior, 26, (pictured) has been a familiar face around Ohakune for the last couple of years and feels quite at home here. Originally from the small Swiss-German township of Tann-Ruti (30 kms from Zurich) he is a painter - decorator and silk screen printer by trade. Before coming to Ohakune he travelled for 1 Vi years through Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy, Israel, Greece, North Africa, India, Pakistan, and Nepal. In Ohakune he soon discovered there was quite a Swiss community already here and decided to stay for a while. He worked at the Ski Rack for two full seasons but also did a variety of different jobs around town. He has now decided to return to Switzerland 'to see what happens' and may return. But he has certainly left his professional mark on this New Zealand town — he painted this updated replacement of Ohakune's street map just before he left.
