SOCCER

Waimarino United continued its impressive form on Sunday 1 July at Ruapehu College with a fine win against the Tongariro Football League leaders, Turangi, 7-3 to be only one point behind them. This was Turangi's first loss and puts the pressure on them when they play third placed Taihape who they drew with earlier in the season. Turangi went quickly to a 2-0 lead with goals from Doug Forbes and Dennis Koenig and it looked as if they would have too much class for Waimarino. However mistakes from their goalkeeper let Rob Eagle and Gary McMillan in for lucky goals whilst Jamie Dennison added a third, shortly before half time, after John Laurenson fired in a strong shot that the goalkeeper could only parry away and Dennison was there to plant it into the back of the net. At half time, Turangi changed their goals but the replacement found the going as tough in goal and sustained pressure from the home side added to his woes. Eagle continued his fine form by scoring three more goals in the second half and was also involved in an unfortunate incident. Replacement for Turangi, Simon Ainsworth had only been on the field for ten minutes when he went in strongly against Eagle, and came off second best. He was taken by ambulanceto Waimarino Hospital . with a suspected broken leg. Eagle was able to run his injury off and completed an outstanding game. James Waerea finished the rout just before full time after Turangi had pegged back a goal through a strong Doug Forbes shot. This was an outstanding performance by Waimarino and shows the improvement they have made as the season reaches the half way mark.

There was a noticeable lack of the earlier incidents of indiscipline which had marred their previous performance in this most recent game which was pleasing to see.
