Local teams all recorded excellent wins on Saturday 23 June, Ohakune defeating previously unbeaten Marist Celtic, 18-6, to go second in the First Division Championship, Waiouru beating Wanganui Pirates, 24-10, to be second in the Second Division, and Raetihi prevailing over Queen Alexandra 19-4 to also be second, but in the Third Division. Whetu Mareikura, ably substituting for All Black Andrew Donald scored after eight minutes with a welltaken try, this coming after Lachlan Harding had converted a penalty attempb From then on, Ohakune and Marist Celtic were even, both sets of forwards competing well, until towards the end of the second half, when Steve Gordon intercepted on the Celtic 22 metre line and raced away for a try. This correspondent may be forced to eat her words, Ohakune are certainly looking championship potential. The match that may well decide whether the title comes to Ohakune, will take place on 7 July, when Wanganui High School Old Boys, currently first on points difference only, play at Ohakune.
