On the 2 July adjacent to the Owhango One Stop Ski Shop, Mrs Bev Muraahi and Mr Peter Bethwaite propose to open a new takeaway service. Not only creating employment for two extra staff but also providing "fast foods" to the community and passing motorists. ★ ★ ★ On Saturday 23 June the Owhango Fire Brigade combined their honours evening with a farewell for their Chief Fire Officer Mr Maurice Cooper and wife Betty, who are retiring and shifting to Coromandel. Chief Fire Officer from Taumarunui Mr Barry Fisher presented two-year bars to Mr Lawrence Forlong total of 13 years, Mr Trevor Begg total of 1 1 years, Mr George Brown three year certificate. Approximately 250 people filled the Owhango Public Hall which included brigade representativesfrom Raetihi, National Park, Mananui and Taumarunui. A gift of appreciation and a bouquet were also presented to Maurice and Betty Cooper. Thirteen members from the National Park Country Music Club, provided entertainment for a most responsive and appreciative audience which included a couple of swinging numbers by local Fire brigade member Mr Gary Cooper. Owhango identities, Mr Pirini's splendid service as barman throughout the evening was appreciated by all and the Scotts, a family from Owhango, who organised a superb supper with the highlight being a dressed pig donated by Mr Les Wishnowsky. "The best social I have been to in nearly 40 years," commented Mr Noel Coogan a Katieke farmer. The Owhango Fire Brigade have been in operation for 1 8 years, they meet alternate Wednesday's at 7pm and presently engage 1 4 members. As yet, the new Chief Fire Officer has not been appointed.
