RED CROSS DEVELOPING EMERGENCY BEDDING BANK
One of the major projects of the Waimarino branch of Red Cross during the last 1 8 months has been to develop supplies of bedding as part of the equipment for an Emergency Bedding Bank. The idea is that the Branch's Welfare Section will have available supplies of bedding which can be loaned when required in an emergency such as a fire or major accident. At present, the Branch holds enough blankets, pillows and quilts to adequately provide enough bedding for a family of four. The provision of bedding is part of Red Cross's overall welfare responsibility under the Civil Defence mandate and it is essential that supplies be available for any emergency. Last year, the local branch of Women's Division of Federated Farmers made a very generous donation of items which boosted the Branch's stocks considerably. However, more blankets, sheets, rugs and pillows are needed if an adequate standard is to be met in case of a large-scale emergency
involving more than 4 people. The Branch would be grateful of any donations of bedding which is no longer required, to assist in building up supplies. Any such- gifts, it should be remembered, will be available locally and used for local emergencies. One such minor emergency was when Ruapehu College 4th Form students were caught out on a cold and wet 2-day 'Round the Mountain' tramp during which time it also snowed. Ruapehu College decided to send a truck with warm, dry bedding to the top of the Ohakune Mountain Road to meet the students. Even more recently, in last week's disastrous fire at the Callaghan home in Tainui Street, Ohakune, the Red Cross not only supplied the family with emergency bedding but also channelled through all offers of clothes and other essential items which had been so generously donated by local people. If you could help, please leave any items with Mrs J. Warbrick at the library in Ohakune, or contact Mrs Sue Kumeroa, Red Cross Welfare Officer for the Waimarino Branch, or Mrs
J.
