Main trunk line submissions
Twelve submissions on the re-routing of a section of track on the Main Trunk Line between Ohakune and Horopito are being assessed by the Commission for the Environment. This section of track passes through part of the Tongariro National Park and comments/objections to the proposed deviation were called for by New Zealand Railways earlier this month. The realignment is to allow for the faster and heavier electric locomotives which will replace the present diesel-powered locomotives when the Main Trunk Line is electrified. The project involves a realignment of the Track through the Park, replacement of viaducts, new cuttings and embankments. New Zealand Railways prepared an Environmental Impact Report and this is now being studied by four government departments — , DSIR, Lands and Survey, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Wildlife Service — and other organisations and individuals.
