CONSERVATION WEEK TO CONCENTRATE ON WATER RESOURCES

Conservation Week 1984 — 28 July to 5 August — will concentrate on New Zealand's water resources. The Chairman of Conservation New Zealand, Mr Colin McLeod, said that the campaign would aim to make people aware of the country's aquatic resources and the need to manage them wisely. "New Zealand as a country is well-endowed with fresh water, yet many towns and cities can become critically short of water in the summer. For the past 30 years there have been policies to protect and improve water quality, and as use increases we can all appreciate the importance of protecting the quality of water in rivers, lakes and coastal areas."

Radio and television programmes, newspaper and magazine articles and the various activities of branches of Conservation New Zealand throughout the country would use Conservation Week to focus people's attention both on the need for fresh clean water for all plant and animal life, and on the -increasingly heavy demands being made on a static water supply by industrial and domestic users. Conservation New Zealand would also produce a wallchart with teachers' . notes for use in schools, leaflets, enveiope stickers and other instructional material and these would be distributed to various outlets around the country during. the run-up to Conservation Week, said Mr McLeod.
