Racing with BULLY

The first day at Manawatu saw good racing with some very exciting finishes. Probably the best finish of the day was surprisingly enough in the Melford Steeples where Tara rewa had the barest of nose margin over Celtic Sun with Farfella only a nose back in third place.

It was a tremendous battle once these three got over the last fence and Celtic Sun had it won everywhere except right on the line. This fellow looks as though it will pay to stay with him in the big steeples from now on as his trainer, Clem Goss has him very fit and strong at the moment. Betim won the major flat race of the day just nudging out Upokonui in the last couple of strides and there could be more for him during the next few weeks. I think the most impressive win of the day had to be the four year old gelding, Under The Clock. He gave it a go right from the start and led for all the last 600 metres to beat the hard battling Colman who fought very hard for his second. The Hawkes Bay Jockey

Club.races this week and Manawatu form is generally pretty useful to keep in mind. Although his last race was at Wanganui one local to say on side with would be Sky Beau. His two races over fences at Wanganui were impressive for two placings but I expect him to come up very nicely on his own track. Rocky Lad is working like an early improver and Charlie could surprise in his first attempt over hurdles. I hear he is a natural jumper and he has been clearing the battens in fine style. Up north, Debs Mate showed them once again what a champion he is and with Debby Healy in the saddle his win took his earnings close to the $250,000 mark. Debby knows this horse and his

every mood and he always does his utmost for her. Around the Central Districts Trusttum was a bit disappointing on the first day at Manawatu but I feel he is too good to let go just on the last effort. Stick with him and I am sure you will be rewarded. Another from Awapuni who generally comes right at this time of the year is Flying Tui so watch the acceptances and don't let her get away' from you. Placed third on the first day, Gaimoss is generally a good winter horse so don't let her slip through your fingers when you are sorting our Quinellas or Trifectas on our new jet bet system in the Waimarino. Remember slips beat the lips ... good luck.
