Former College teacher killed
The death occurred during Queen's Birthday weekend of a young woman who is remembered with respect and affection in the Waimarino. Gillian Price, 25, was struck by a motorcycle as she was walking in Mt Maunganui on Monday 4 June. She died in Tauranga Hospital. Gillian would be wellknown in the Waimarino even though her home was in Taupo. She taught at
Ruapehu College for almost two years and Only left the area at the end of last year. She was appointed to a temporary position at the College in the Winter term of 1982 and stood in for Merrilyn George during Mrs George 's leave of absence to compile the research for her book on the history of the Waimarino. This experience of teaching art — as well as other subjects — became a favourite subject for her so that, when an opportunity came up to teach art at Mount Maunganui College this year, she took it. "She was a remarkable young lady," said Ruapehu College principal,. Mike Warbrick, last week. "She was tremendously popular and talented, keen on the outdoors and a competent skier." At her funeral in Taupo last Thursday week many of the mourners were people of her own age from all over the country ... "an indication of the popularity this young lady enjoyed among her many friends," said Mr Warbrick. "It was a tragic loss of someone with so much potential."
