Many eligible voters still not enrolled

More than 86 percent of eligible voters throughout the country are on the 1984 electoral rolls. The roll total of 1.97 million voters includes 126,415 new enrolments which is 86.3% of the estimated number of eligible voters. The 1984 figure of 1.97 million compares with a total of 1.77 million voters who were on the rolls at the time of the 1981 General Election. This national figure means that there are still about 28,000 eligible voters still not enrolled. If this figure was divided equally between each of the 95 electorates there would be about 300 eligible voters

in each electorate who were not enrolled. According to Ihe Registrar of Electors for King Country, Mr Manu Wihapi of Te Kuiti, his office sent out 20,121 roll revision cards on 6 March. Of the 20,121 cards sent out a total of 19,653 were returned. Of these 12,923 were completed and returned without change by 31 May. A further 5,544 were returned with changes to address and other details. Another 1,186 were returned 'gone ... no address' and these will go onto the 'dormant' file which means that they will still be eligible to vote when located. In addition to these

figures recorded on 31 May there were 1,128 new enrolments in the King Country electorate. "This gives us a percentage new roll compared with old role total of 96.71%," said Mr Wihapi, last week. It presents a very satisfactory picture of the state of the rolls in the King Country, he said, but there are still many eligible voters out there who still have a slight chance of getting onto the roll. "But we must receive their registration forms in Te Kuiti by noon on Tuesday (today). That means for people in the Waimarino they must have posted their forms to the Electoral Office, Te Kuiti, before 5 pm on Mondav."
