NEWS FROM PIPIRIKI

In contrast to Easter, when over 500 people visited the Colonial House at Pipiriki in perfect weather conditions, Queen's Birthday weekend was mostly grey and damp. Only a few people passed through the river port and township, but not many bothered to stop. Pipiriki Jetboat Tours took 1 1 tourists up the river during the three days, while 18 people viewed the Colonial house visitors centre and museum. Three privately owned jetboats took hunters in to the remote areas upstream of Pipiriki, where wild pigs are found. One group were so successful that they returned after only one day with 3 animals for their deep freezers. On Sunday night a group of 6 young people stayed at the camping area at Pipiriki, on the site of the former Pipiriki House, after cycling downfrom Raetihi. Although their original intentions were to proceed to Hiruharema (Jerusalem), after looking at the Colonial House, they decided to use some different leg muscles and walk up the Pukehinau Hill (the site of a Hau Hau pa during the days of the Maori wars). After cycling up the Parapara Road from Wanganui, they enjoyed the easy ride through to Pipiriki and were looking forward to a good return trip, via the River Road, back to their homes in Wanganui.
