SPORT AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES
RUGBY Queen's Birthday Weekend provided three notable occasions for the Ohakune Club. On Saturday they capped off an impressive first half to the season by defeating Technical College Old Boys 22-0 and so claimed their promotion spot ahead of second placed Wanganui High School Old Boys. The second round sees these two teams up in the First Division where the games will certainly be tougher. It is predicted that Ohakune will certainly hold its own but championship prospects without Andrew Donald playing regularly will certainly diminish. For the record, Ohakune played seven games, won all seven scoring 215 points with 50 scored against. Scorers for Ohakune against T.C.O.B. were: S. Gordon (2), L. Harding, H.
Donald tries. R Brown 3 conversions. In a sad end to the first round for Raetihi — Marton Old Boys defeated them 36-3. Supporters of Raetihi must be extremely disappointed as only fourteen men made the journey to Marton. Although it was an open game, a Jeff Fahey penalty goal was all Raetihi had to show at the end of the day. They are now relegated to the third division having played seven games, beating only their fellow relegation friends, Bulls, and scoring 35 points with 135 against. The impressive Waiouru Red side step into Raetihi's place in the second division having played and won seven games and scored a massive 233 points with 30 against them. In a mixed season for Ohakune, their second fifteen is demoted to the fourth division having won
one game, scoring 38 points with 252 against. The news, on Queen's Birthday Sunday, that Andrew Donald had once again been selected for the All Blacks, this time in a home test against France, although being a predictable decision, was still greeted with pleasure by Ohakune club members and Donald himself. His play this season has been of a tremendously high standard and the obvious improvement in his game can directly be attributed to the off-season tour of the United Kingdom. Donald was one of the few to come through the tour with reputation intact. Finally, on the Monday, three Ohakune players figured strongly in the 20-3 win Wanganui recorded over Taranaki. Bruce Cranston, an understandably nervous Walter Cassidy in
his debut game and team captain Andrew Donald all played well with Donald in particular celebrating his All Black selection with a great display of a half back play at its best. Cassidy obviously has mOre to offer and one feels that it will not be long before Wanganui supporters see the type of explosive running that Ohakune people have come to expect from him. Thus a mixed weekend for Ohakune with the news not all good but certainly one to remember.
