'Support in principle' given to Ruapehu information centre

The Raetihi Borough Council last month gave its 'support in principle' to a request from John Sandford of Ohakune who had written to various local authorities in the Waimarino about his proposal to establish an Information Centre that would serve the entire Ruapehu region. The Ruapehu Information Centre would promote the whole region including Pipiriki, the Wanganui River, Raetihi, National Park, Whakapapa, Tokaanu and Turangi, Waiouru and Ohakune as an attractive holiday area with a variety of activities. It would be promoted and marketed as a single unit. The proposal was to

establish a central office in Ohakune which would be open seveh days a week. It would be staffed by two employees with supplementary funding by the Department of Labour under the Job Creation Scheme. Mayor Workman said that the concept was an excellent one and urged Council to support it 'in principle'. Cr Compton agreed but said that at this stage the support must be 'in principle' only as no costsharing funds for such a project had been included in the Estimates and more details will have to be obtained before any contractural arrangement is entered into.
