School seeks help with wasp problem

The Raetihi Borough Council last week decided to write to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the DSIR regarding the wasp problem in Raetihi. This was in response to a letter received from the Raetihi School Committee requesting assistance to minimise the problem of children being stung by wasps. The incidence of wasp

stings during the summer mOnths and warm autumn days had been increasing and they were causing the children a great deal of distress. The problem appears to be with wasp nests on the boundary of the school property. Cr Compton cited a similar situation on the West Coast of the South Island

where wasps had become a rnajor nuisance. He said he understood help to eradicate the problem had been sought from either the DSIR or the MAF. Raetihi Borough Council defcided they should approach both these government departments to combat the increasing problem which had obviously got beyond the point where it could be controlled by Council staff.
