Conditions for annual art prize announced

Ohakune will again host the annual Art Awards exhibition which will be on view to the public from Monday 27 August until 12 noon on Saturday 1 September. The Ohakune Club have again generously donated the use of the upstairs " lounge in the Club premises in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune, to house this the sixth annual exhibition organised by the Turoa (Ohakune) Art Awards committee in cooperation with the Ohakune Promotions Association. Last year over 150 entries were received, and it is expected that a similar number will be received again this year. The awards are open to all artists normally resident in the Central North Island area, from and including Hamilton in the north to Levin in the south. Schedules and entry forms will be available from P.R.O. or Trusteebank offices, or on receipt of a stamped addressed envelope from

The Convenor, Turoa (Ohakune) Art Awards, P.O. Box 91, Ohakune. The closing date for entries is Friday 10 August. The generosity of the business community operating in the Waimarino area has enabled the organising committee to offer increased awards this year. The premier award of $500 jointly sponsored by the Trusteebank Wanganui and the Ohakune Borough Council will be awarded for the work judged best overall in the exhibition. The winning entry will be selected from the winning entries in the following awards: Award for Oil Colour sponsored by Dalgety Crown Ltd $150. Award for Water Colour sponsored by Junction Ski Shop Ohakune $150. Award for any other medium $150. Award for portraiture $150. The Mt Ruapehu Award sponsored by Turoa Skifields $100. Award for the best entry by an artist who has not previously entered work in

any open exhibition sponsored by the Waimarino Bulletin $150. The entries will be judged by an experienced artist from outside the exhibition area. Entries in last year's exhibition were judged by Mr Brian Carmody, President of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, who awarded the Premier Award of $200 to Mrs Lyndon Wilson of Otorohanga, for her oil colour 'Rangitoto Range'. It is indeed encouraging to artists throughout the Central North Island area to enter their work in the exhibition, and to join with other artists in striving to attain an ever increasing confidence in their work. The sincere appreciation of the organising committee and of the artists themselves goes to those who so generously sponsor these awards year by year, and to those whose generous donations of funds make this exhibition possible.
