Ohakune hosts indoor bowlers

The Ngauruhoe Centre mixed singles held a bowls tournament at the Ohakune

Primary School on 21 May. Thirty-two players entered the five-round tournament,

but eventually only two would make it to the finals. Ethel Allerby, secretary of the Ruapehu Association who ran the tournament, was one of the two finalists. Mrs Allerby said that ten of the 32 players in the tournament came from the two Ohakune clubs. Players from the Ohakune Club were Iris Reid, Jon Schrier, Elaine Cornwall, Bob Brown, Harry Brown and Louis Fetzer. Colin McKenzie, a member of the Ohakune Club from Waiouru, travelled the furthest distance to compete in the tournament. Players from the Kahitanga Club in Ohakune were Jim Weir, Bryce Battersby and Ethel Allerby. Ethel Allerby and Louis Fetzer were the two finalists. Louis Fetzer won the tournament and was awarded a silver cup. Mrs Allerby received a silver bar as runner-up.
