WAIOURU NEWS

Pranksters made life difficult for motorists towing trailers over Easter weekend when they placed a 'Road Closed to Trailers' sign on SH1 north cjf Waiouru. Many travellers detoured to get to their destinations. ★ ★ ★ Easter weekend saw a spate of accidents on the main highway near Waiouru. Many were due to vehicles following too close and generally not adhering to the rules of the road. With the above average traffic on the roads this Easter, Friday afternoon saw all three Waiouru service stations without Super petrol for 5 hours. Regular 91 Octane fuel was rationed at $10 a car to enable motorists to get to the next town but those who could not use Regular had to wait patiently until a petrol tanker arrived later that night. ★ ★ ★ Waiouru police are investigating an unusual robbery committed on the night of Friday 27 April. Thieves took four mag wheel tyres valued at $610 from a late model Holden car that had broken down and was parked in the Waiouru Military Museum carpark. On Saturday morning, police recovered a Kawasaki motorcycle stolen from Havelock North, in the Tangiwai area. Anyone who

may have picked up a hitchhiker that night in the general area is asked-to contact the local police. The rash of robberies at M.S.D. Spiers continued last week with a storage shed being broken into on two separate occasions. On the 23 April a sheet of particle board valued at $35, was removed and on 26 April from the same shed, a Kent tile fire valued at $600 was stolen. Cathy Cross
