NEWS IN BRIEF

• A decision on the status of the Wanganui River Park will probably be announced this month. The decision is expected to be in favour of establishing a National Park, as all the criteria necessary have been met but a fewformalities still have to be completed. ★ ★ ★ • A farewell function for Maurice Trail, principal of the Waiouru Primary School for eight years, and his wife Lois was held at the end-of-term staff party on the Waiouru marae last week. ★ ★ ★ • The Ohakune Hotel has a new relieving manager. Following the departure of the former relieving manager, Mr Trevor Blong, the week before, Mr Milton Mellow and his wife Val took over the position last week. They had previously ^managed the Station Hotel in Wanganui. ★ ★ ★ • Raetihi Hotel managers Ross and Sonya Difford have, unlike their predecessor, enjoyed their 3-month stay at the hotel ("no problems at all") but will be moving on at the end of this month — possibly to run a motel in the Taupo area — when the new lessee of Raetihi Hotel takes over. ★ ★ ★ • A film entitled "River in Question ... Manganui-a-te-Ao", is to have its premiere screening at the Royal Theatre in Raetihi on Thursday. The 50-minute film which has been made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries cost in excess of $ 1 50,000 and took nearly three years to complete. It is understood the film is being screened to an 'invitation only' audience of between 50-70 people. ★ ★ ★ • The horse-trekking season is well underway. One Ohakune operator reports a very busy Easter weekend with an average 10 riders for each of the twice-daily treks during the 4-day period.
