New Emergency 111 service experiencing some teething problems

For the second time in three days the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade were called out in response to the alarm siren being sounded in Ohakune following an Emergency 1 1 1 call. Nothing much wrong with that ... except that it was to two chimney fires in Raetihi which has its own Fire Brigade and the 1 1 1 calls had been made from there last Wednesday and Friday. Acpording to Ohakune's Fire Chief, Max Martin, both calls were the result of a "proper foul-up in the system plus some unfamiliarity with the new automatic exchange 1 1 1 emergency service among local operators ... but that's been cleared up now." Fortunately both fires

were not serious and were attended to by the appropriate brigades eventually. Whilst we do not want to appear alarmist about our concern with the new 111

emergency system, we would like to hear from our readers who might have had cause to use the system since the local telephone exchange went automatic last month.
