Racing with BULLY

This week sees the opening of the duck shooting season and we wish all shooters the very best of luck, and may you all get limit bags as well. Down at the swamps and lakes . while the guns will be cracking, the whips will be cracking at Auckland, Poverty Bay and Wellington. .And with the jumping season now under way a lot of attention will be focused on the earlyform because the first big jumping carnival at Waikato is only a couple of weeks away and that is followed immediately by the Great Northern Carnival at Ellerslie. There was some tremendous racing over Easter and as predicted in a recent column, television caught most of the action and could anybody ask for a more thrilling contest than that between Decanka and Commissionaire on the last day at Ellerslie. The pride of the Central Districts, Commissionaire looked to have an unassailable lead as they came in with two hundred metres to go, but Decanka fought on and with great determination gradually gathered in the champion to beat him by a very short

margin. Great television when you see races like that. Another highlight of . Easter vieiwing, and fortunately it ended without any permanent damage to horses or drivers, was the nine-horse fall in the Trotting Derby at Addington. TV was right on the spot when Liquid Lightning tried to jump the shadow of a light standard and crashed heavily causing absolute chaos in the field behind. The great feat of the weekend though was probably the riding performance of Gary Phillips

who rode four winners at Feilding on Saturday artd another four at Riccarton on Monday. Those eight winners now take Phillips to the top of the table and he could be very hard to catch from here. Several to watch when next they saddle up are Compromise and Marton, both from Woodville and Galvano from Wanganui. From Takanini Reigning Beauty looks set to win at any moment. Remember Bully tips them first and you will read it in the Bulletin.
