Ohakune lead the second division of the Wanganui Club Rugby Championship after their first round 33-3 win against neighbouring Raetihi and their second round 14-12 win over Wanganui High School Old Boys. In the first game, played at Raetihi on Saturday 7 April, Walter Cassidy starred by scoring four tries, halfback Mark Osborne, soon to leave the club, Scored two, whilst Ray Brown converted three of the tries and Lachland Harding kicked a penalty. For Raetihi, Jeff Fahey scored a second half penalty. The second game, played in Wanganui, saw both Ohakune and H.S.O.B. playing fine rugby and only a second half penalty separating the teams. Winger Walter Cassidy continued his scoring spree from the previous week by racing over in
the first minute for a well takeri try. Darryl Wiremu, recently selected . for the Wanganui squad, replied for the H.S.O.B. with a try, John Fearn also kicked the conversion, a penalty and landed a dropped goal. Ohakune's Ray Brown kicked a penalty and scored a try tomake the half-time score 12-11 to H.S.O.B. A penalty, kicked under great pressure from Ray Brown fifteen minutes from time clinched Ohakune-'s victory. Ex-Manawatu prop, Graeme Pike, continued to impress with his play an is a hard-working example for all around him. Mark Hays, Hugh Donald and Bruce Cranston also played well in the forward pack whilst Mark Osborne had another fine game at half back. He will be sorely missed by the club as representative duty by Andrew Donald will rob Ohakune of his.
services for many of the important games to come. Donald showed his versatility by playing at second five eighth against Raetihi and first five last weejcend. Raetihi, in its second home game, failed to use this advantage against Hunterville going down 10-6 in a scrappy game. For Hunterville: Jack Baker, two penalties, Andre Meads, one try. Raetihi: Ivan Hall, try, Jeff Fahey, conversion. Raetihi are now last in the table and need to improve over last week's effort before moving from that position. Waiouru Waiouru Red 'Skudders Red Army' showed their previous win was no fluke when they easily accounted for Wanganui Pirates II last week. Dominating all phases of play they had too much pace all around and ran in nine tries to record a 40-0 win. AlthOugh not getting among the tries the AGI Player of the Day award went to non-stop flanker Kevin Henry whose speed to the loose ball set up most of the plays for the Reds.
