SOCCER

Following their impressive win over Taumarunui by 7-0 the previous week Waimarino United were comprehensively beaten on Sunday 15 April 7-3 by Taihape at Taihape College. Lacking a strong defence and with an inexperienced goalkeeper, Waimarino found it difficult to stop the opposition's tall forwards getting behind the defence to hammer home the goals. In particular, Richard Bell had a field day for Taihape, scoring four goals almost at will.

On a pleasing note for Waimarino United, the form of newcomer Gary McMillan augered well for the rest of the season. His commitment in going forward was a great example for all around him. Several youngsters from Ruapehu Cojlege found the game a little too physical for their liking and their lack of size was a hindrance. Other players to impress were John Laurenson in midfield, Tom Ball and Rod Gill in defence. Jamie Dennison also had a worthwhile game up front. Scorers for Taihape were: Hirriwaka (own goal), R. Bell 4, C. George, A. Green. Waimarino United G. McMillan 2, J. Dennison 1.
