The lighter side of Council meetings

It was not all serious business at last month's meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council. Some lighter moments were prompted by typing errors and phrasing in the Minutes. • One of these referred to the application that had been made to the New Zealand Lottery Board for a Local Authority's commun^^facilities fund for an all ^Bther cover for swimmers at the Raetihi 'sewerage' baths! • In another Minute from the Works and Reserves Committee Item 4.1.2. Ladies Rest Room stated: "Councillor Tapp reported that he had spoken to the principal of the College coneerning the graffiti on the walls of the Ladies restroom." "The Borough Foreman advised that no further writings had been made on the walls." Cr Tapp hastened to assure Council that when he spoke to the principal of the Gollege it was about the possibility of some college

students and not the principal himself being responsible for writing graffiti on the walls of the Ladies restroom in Raetihi! • In another instance, when Cr. Compton asked if the Mayor intended accepting the invitation to participate in World Vision's 40-hour famine, Mr Workman said that he would be too busy and suggested that it would be more appropriate for the deputy mayor to represent the council. (The deputy mayor is Cr. Compton). • When the question of flags and flagpoles was discussed there was some doubt as to when to fly a flag (everyday or only on State or borough occasions?) and who would be responsible for raising and lowering the flag (the mayor, councillors, borough staff, borough foreman etc?) One of the coucillors said that it was all very well to talk about this ceremonial occasion "... but have we actually got a flag?" He was assured that Council did have a flag.
