Annual Rotary Conference held in Wellington

A highlight of the Rotary year, the Annual Conference was held in Wellington at . the Michael Fowler Centre on 24, 25, 26 February. Hosted by District Governor Bill Boyd and the Rotary Club of Wellington South, this was the 28th Conference for District 994 and was attended by approximately 500 Rotarians

and their wives. Four members from the RaetihiOhakune Club attended. "Share Rotary — Serve People", is International President William E. Skelton's theme for the year and this was well demonstrated by projects undertaken by many clubs represented at Conference; one of these projects is the Emergency

Box Scheme which provides a ready stock of useful items packed in standard containers ready for use in an emergency anywhere inNew Zealand. These items are inexpensive and in many cases second hand or used but serviceable. Guest speakers were: The Right Honorable Sir Ronald Davison GBE, CHG, Chief Justice of New Zealand who officially opened Conference; Brigadier Sir William Gilbert, KBE, DSO, spoke on wildlife; Captain Campbell Roberts, a Salvation Army Officer who has specialised in spheres of industry and unemployment. He has been closely involved with the Works Skills Development Programmes of the Salvation Army and has had close liaison with the Labour Dept. in setting up the STEPS programme. Also present from Sydney was Leslie W. McGregor, Rotary International representative. A social evening with a country and western flavour was held on the Saturday evening and Sunday morning's Service of Worshipwas led by the Wellington South Salvation Army Band. The Conference for 1985 will be hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Palmerston North.
