Definitely not 'swollen'
In last week's edition we used the word 'swollen' in relation to crossing rivers as part of Ruapehu College's Outdoor Skills programme. Crossing 'swollen' rivers is definitely a "no-no" as far as the outdoor skills programme and the Mountain Safety Council is concerned,- said college co-ordinator of the programme Graeme Brebner. "We teach students how to make group crossings of shallow, fast-flowing rivers of clear water but advise against attempting a crossing of a murky river which is running high," he said. The correct procedure then is to find an alternative crossing or wait for help.
