Runner receives recognition

Raetihi runner, Siggy Bauer, was high on the list of athletes considered for the Sports Writers'New Zealand Athlete of the Year award which was announced on Friday 9 March. He was in fourth place (with 9 votes) behind Rod Dixon of Auckland (20 votes), John Walker of Auckland (16 votes) and Anne Audain of Auckland (12 votes). Voting for the annual award is based on performances between March 1983 and February 1984. Siggy was surprised and delighted with this recognition both for himself and the comparatively new sport of ultra-distance running. He came ahead of other high profile athletes such as Lorraine Moller and Mike O'Rourke of Auckland.
