Driving School set up
An independent venture that should make our roads safer has got under way in the Waimarino recently. Mrs Dorothy Burgess of Ohakune has started a driving school and plans to extend her operations throughout the Waimarino from National Park to Waiouru. Mrs Burgess has been preparing for this venture since last October when she sat and passed all five theory papers and then was given a practical test to assess her own driving ability. This was followed by a defensive driving course arfd then she had to demonstrate her ability to teach by taking Wanganui's senior traffic officer for his 'first-ever' driving lesson as a 'learner driver!' She then had to prepare and present a driving course syllabus in writing before she could qualify as a
driving instructor. She gained her qualifications last month and now extends an invitation to all non-drivers and learner drivers in the Waimarino to contact her in Ohakune (see classified advertisement) if they either want to learn from scratch -and develoi^ confidence or simply wa^B an assessment of their readiness to sit the driving test in their own vehicles, To prepare her pupils for city driving she has to use simulated traffic Iight-con-trolled intersections and pedestrian crossings. Mrs Burgess, who charges $8 for a one-hour lesson, is available during the day all week and at weekends as well as after school for college students.
