Is 'busy-ness' related to 'Godliness'?
One of the real problems of our time is the general belief that 'busy-ness' is in some way related to 'Godliness'. We find this general view expressed fairly clearly in secular society as well as in the churches. The more committees, groups, organisations and activities one participates in the better one is seen to be. Now there must be something wrong with this. In fact, there is! That is not to say people ought not to take their fair share of church and community
responsibilities. Not at all, but rather that there should be a careful balance. Obviously the church has been aware Of the problems associated with 'busy-ness'. For many Christians, the church season of Lent puts a special focus upon us and upon our busy lives because our Lord said, "... Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." It is good for spiritual health as well as good for
mental and physical health to seek silence and reflection to recharge our batteries. A rested settled soul is far better able to cope with the problems of daily living as well as to offer help to others. Thcse of us who keep the Lenten Fast as part of our Christian tradition are thinking on these matters during the 6-week period of Lent which began on Wednesday 7 March.
