Search and Rescue reconnaisance
Successful search-and-rescue chances in the Wanganui River catchment area will have been enhanced by the 6-day familiarisation trip completed recently by an 8-man team of police (six from Wanganui, one from Marton and one from Taihape). The police team learnt canoe-handling skills and then set off down the river
from Taumarunui to Pipiriki, exploring many of the tributaries on the way. "It helped us appreciate the vastness and remoteness of the wilderness area and our familiarisation tour should improve the chances of anyone requiring the services of search and rescue in the future" said Sergeant Gray of Wanganui last week.
