River Park inspection
Members of the National Parks and Reserves Authority are due to meet in Wanganui later this week to continue their investigations into the feasibility of establishing the proposed Wanganui National Park. The inspection party will consist of about 24 people including Mr Tony Phillips, commissioner of Crown Lands and members of the Lands and Survey Department. They will consider the report by the Lands and Survey Department which was prepared from submissions received from local authorities in the area including Raetihi and Ohakune Borough Councils and
the Waimarino County Council. Their tour of inspection will include visits to various walkways through the proposed park and a flight over the more inacessible area of the park by helicopter. They will spend two nights in the park before canoeing or jet boating down the Wanganui River to Pipiriki. Pipiriki's senior ranger John Lythgoe, will accompany the official party.
