PULP MILL EXPECTS TO BREAK EVEN
The $2 million expansion currently being undertaken at the Winstone Samsung Pulpmill in Karioi should enable the mill to break even in the 1985 financial year, according to a report by Auckland sharebrokers Buttie Wilson and Co. The introduction of the final chemical stage into the former thermo-mechanical pulp (TMP) has raised the value of the end product and widened the market. Before the conversion to CTMP the mill's TMP pulp output was suitable only for low grade papers in a limited market. But since the introduction of the chemical stage in late 1 982 demand has outstripped production. In 1983 the mill had orders for 36,946 tonnes but , could produce only 32,514 tonnes. In the first half of 1984 alone, orders have been received for 29,883 tonnes against an estimated output of 26,210 tonnes. Hence the $2 million expansion work currently being undertaken.
