Tanks take a tumble
An Army transporter carrying two Scorpion tanks from Waiouru to New Plymouth where they were to have featured in the 5th Battalion's 125 anniversary celebrations, was involved in a road accident on Thursday 23 February. The transporter 'rolled' while negotiating a corner about 15kms south of Raetihi on the Parapara ^fe>ad (SH4). The accident BRippened just before midday. No other vehicles were involved. Damage to the two tanks,
estimated to be worth $1 million each, is believed to be repairable but the transporter was extensively damaged and salvage was uncertain. Of the two transporter crew members, one was flown to Palmerston North Hospital with back injuries for observation while the other suffered only minor cuts and bruises. A military court of , inquiry has been convened to determine thecause of the accident.
