Carnival Day Parade

Ohakune is holding a special 'Carnival Day' tomorrow (Wednesday) to coincide with the RNZN Charter Parade by the crew of HMNZS Irirangi. Starting at 10.40am the parade will form at Christie Park in Ohakune and then march down to the Council Chambers in Miro Street to the accompaniment of music provided by the 29piece band of the Royal New Zealand Navyfrom HMNZS Philomel in Auckland. It is the same brass and reed band, complete with drum corps, that played in Waitangi earlier this month. About 60 members of the 84-strong ship's companies of HMNZS Irirangi will take part in the parade ... the remainder have to remain 'on board' to ensure that the Navy's 24-hour communication watch at Waiouru is maintained. At the council chambers the salute will be taken by the Mayor of Ohakune. Following the speeches of welcome, the parade will move down Miro Stret to Clyde Street where it will turn right into Clyde Street

and march through the main shopping area to the Clyde Street/ Moore Street triangle. From there the parade will return through Clyde Street, turn into Goldfinch Street to proceed up to the Ohakune Club where lunch will be taken. After lunch the Navy band will present a 90minute programme of music in Jubilee Park (next to the Bulletin office) at 1.30pm. To coincide with this festive occasion Ohakune's retailers will be holding a 'Market Day' with street stalls, specials, etc. Children from all the local schools in the Waimarino from National Park in the north, Kakatahi in the south and Waiouru in the east have been invited to attend the Charter Parade ceremony in Ohakune. It is expected that many local residents and visitors will also watch the parade, listen to the band and enjoy Ohakune's Carnival Day. Television New Zealand have confirmed that they will be here to cover the event and other news media will also be present.
