Anyone for Cricket?
An attempt was made two years ago to form a local cricket team and about 25 people put their names forward as interested players. A committee was formed and decided to approach the Rangitikei Association regarding the possibility of entering their competition, and their reaction was extremely favourable. However, when after about $800 was spent on gear, a practice net and even specially made team jerseys, the so called 'interested' players were suddenly very hard to find. There was a strong following by only about 5 or 6 people and they showed up for every practice. Most of the money was presented to the club by the New Zealand Lotterv Board with some from the
annual subs which were only $10. The rest, about $170, was paid for by one of the committee members. Despite fairly extensive advertising, a lot of people have since claimed to have been interested but did not know that a team had been formed. The gear is still here, along with the few genuinely interested players, so if there is anyone else who is prepared to play — and it will only be social games at this stage — then contact Mike Beytagh in Raetihi or John Kennedy (Jnr) in Ohakune (see advert). Only those genuinely interested and not likely to let everyone else down are asked to contact the above-named.
