FORMER FIREMAN FEATURES IN RESCUE ATTEMPT

A former Ohakune fireman and restaurateur attempted to save the life of a young child trapped in a burning car in Marton two weeks ago. He was Mr Harry Hatzen who used to run the fish restaurant and takeaway bar (now the Shoe Shop) in Ohakune's Clyde Street about 10 years ago. He was a member of the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade for three to four years and was "one of the best" according to fellow fireman Johnny Nation. But his attempts to save 3-year old Aroha Rose Maria Rota of Napier who was holidaying with her grandmother in Marton were in vain. He managed to drag the child free from the blazing, smoke-filled car which had been parked outside his Blue Danube restaurant in Broadway, Marton but she died later in Palmerston North Hospital's intensive care unit.
