MAF research backs use of growth promotants

Recent research by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries shows that growth promotants such as Ralgro are economically worthwhile. Cost/benefits at 1982 liveweight prices, of 90 cents/kilogram averaged over $1 1 per implant. As growth promotants are most effective in good feed growth situations riow could be the time to give it a go. Pasture levels are important. If stock are gaining half a kilo or more a day then treating is worthwhile. Treatment should be undertaken at the same time as other farm operations such as drenching. drafting, marking and weighing. All types of stock for fattening can be treated (weaners: vealers. yearlings or adult steers) and weight gains are permanent and cumulative. Weight gained from the use of growth promotants is red meat, not fat. Australian research showed that the'fat to lean ratio reduced with the use of promotants.
