Local shooter wins
Waimarino Gun Club member, Evain Somerville of Raetihi, won the North Island 'B' Grade Championship for the 25-target single-barrel shoot which was held recently in Hastings. Three hundred and fifty shooters from all over New Zealand competed for the championships which lasted three days. Evain was one of the 64 'B' Grade shooters who competed but he was also one of only five shooters out of the total of 350 who scored a 'possible'... 25 our of 25!
It was the first time he has achieved this feat in his 2l/i years with the Waimarino Gun Club. He was naturally delighted with his performance but found it very nervewracking as a large gallery of spectators gathered to watch the final phases of the shoot. It was also the first time a local shooter has achieved such a high placing since Bill Pritt of Ohakune won the New Zealand National Single Rise ChampionsiJ| in April 1963.
