POLICE FILE

There have been a series of fairly major burglaries and break-ins since Christmas, said Ohakune police constable Brian Wilson. Most of the stolen property involved colour television sets, stereo and video equipment ... "they are obviously stealing to order," he said. _• Sometime between 27 December and 1 January a house next to the Waimarino Golf Club at Makarunui was broken into. Property valued at $2700 was taken and damage estimated at $1 500 was caused. • Sometime between 22-29 January a house in Arawa Street, Ohakune, was broken into and $4000 worth of property taken. • A house in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune, was broken into just after the New Year and $ 1 500 worth of property stolen. • The dental clinic in upper Goldfinch Street, Ohakune, was broken into and a colour TV worth $1000 was taken. • The Navy's 'Irirangi Sports and Social Club, about 8km south of Waiouru, was broken into last Tuesday night. About $5 in cash was taken but damage amounted to about $50. • A hedge along the front of a property in Ballance Street, Raetihi, was set alight last Wednesday night. It was deliberately 'torched' in three places at about midnight. Flames reached almost to the power lines above the road. A telephone junction box next to the hedge was melted in the conflagration and had to be replaced by Post Office linesmen the following day. • A Fiat car stolen from outside the Raetihi Hotel last Wednesday evening was found ablaze at the end of Harris Road (off Mangarewa Road) north of Raetihi. The car, belonging to a Wanganui man, was a total write off.
