Baths/Motor Camp
A possible solution to the problem of finding staff to maintain the Raetihi swimming baths and service the chlorination plant was put forward. Following advice from Mr Ross Journeaux before the current swimming season started that he was no longer able to continue with this work, the position had been advertised but there was no response . . . possibly because of the low remuneration and limited tenure offered. Council at it's last meeting discussed an alternative proposal to combine the duties of the new motor camp caretaker (not yet appointed) with those of a swimming baths custodian. Cr Compton pointed out that with the motor camp and the swimming baths next door to each other this would be the logical solution. By combining the two duties and remunerations it would be a worthwhile proposition for the individual and would mean a saving to the council of about $5,000 a year he said. It was proposed to set the combined remuneration for maintaining the motor camp and swimming pool grounds and equipment as well as acting as custodian at $50 per week throughout the year plus free accommodation in the motor camp house. The work would be cyclical with about 20 weeks of 'active' duties during the summer months and a minimai maintenance period for the rest of the year. The proposal found favour with councillors and it was decided to refer the proposal back to the Town Planning and Reserves committee for action.
