Black Powder Club stages annual event

Over the New Year weekend, 30 December to 3 January the Black Powder Section of the Waiouru Rod and Gun Club Inc held their . 2nd Annual Mountain Man Shoot and Rendezvous at Six Cross Camp near the summit of the Desert Road. Fhis is an event where only muzzle loading, black powder weupons are used. A good response was received from the Clubs around New Zealand resulting in 96 competitors taking part. These included several women competing on equal terms, two Australians and a resident New Zealander from New Caledonia. The balance came from as far as Christchurch in the south to Whangarei in the north. It was also pleasing to see the number of families that came and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mostcamped in tents — some of which were along the patterns of those used in the 1860/70's —

creatirig a small village of 250-300 people. The weather could not have been better. The various events held were: 'The String' — try to get all shots as close to the centre as possible; 'Fly Bye' — - clay targets (trap shooting) using muzzle loading shotguns; 'Plains Game' — 5 silhouettes from 28 to 150 paces; 'Renegade' — a figure target; 'Big Bear' — running bear; 'Outlaw' — a figure target shot as a snap shoot (3sec exposure). Axe and knife throwing events were held in the evenings. An event for children aged 6-12 years was also held, with a little assistance from parents. A new novelty event known as the "Trappers Run" was introduced this year and proved very popular. It consisted of 5 different tasks — leaping on a 'horse', loading and firing at a target, throwing an axe, setting a possum

trap, shooting a 'grizzly bear' — to be completed in the shortest time. An auction was held on behalf of the New Zealand Black Powder Shooters Federation to raise money for the NZ team that went to France last year and came back with a Gold medal. The sum of $1200 was raised for the 80 items auctioned. Results of the individual events were: String J. Collins (Auckland). Fly Bye G. Parker (Rotorua). Plains Game J. Collins (Auckland), Renegade I. Buckly (Taradale), Big Bear T. Stimpson (Waitara), Outlaw G. Hunt (Foxton). Teams Troph\ Rotorua, Trappers Run J. Slade (Petone), Axe Throw D. Greeks (Napier), Knife Throw G. Greeks (Napier), Children's Shoot P. Colville (Palm. Nth). After a shoot-off for the first place and several 'of the minor places, the Mountain Man Shoot results were: (1) J. Collins, Auckland; (2) I. Buckly, Taradale (last year's winner); (3) G. Hunt. Foxton; (4) R. Prichard, New Plymouth; (5) A. Colville, Palm. Nth; (6) D. Greeks, Napier; (7) R. Irving. Ohinewai; (8) R. Stent, Turakina; (9) D. Fitzwater, Waiouru; ( 10) C. Corbett, Auckland.
